The thing I love most about my one of a kind intimate yoga studio is that Bodywise Yoga Studio is more than just a yoga studio. Bodywise Yoga Studio is an all encompassing health and fitness facility that offers not only a range and variety of yoga classes, but is also a pilates studio and has a massage clinic in the building-Clinique Masso-Soma. Bodywise Yoga Studio welcomes people of all health and fitness levels and backgrounds. When first I started attending pilates and yoga classes at Bodywise Yoga Studio in September of 2014 I hadn’t attended a pilates class in about 5 years (and even then, I had only attended a few in my lifetime), and I had only been dabbling in yoga for about a year prior (and nothing consistent). With having no real background or experience in pilates or yoga, Bodywise Yoga Studio welcomed me with open arms. I was made to feel that I was meant to be exactly where I was. No judgments. No expectations. Immediately, I was made to feel at home in every class with each unique instructor. Bodywise Yoga Studio took an interest in me and my fitness goals. I was made to feel special, and not just someone else in the crowd. They saw me. They helped me get stronger. I flourished.
Each class at Bodywise Yoga Studio allows for a variety of fitness levels and each instructor provides alternatives or modifications for each posture. So regardless of where you are coming from, you are welcome. There is a place for everyone! From beginner to advanced there is a place for you. When I first started practicing pilates at Bodywise Yoga Studio, I didn’t understand the connection between pilates and yoga! After practicing pilates alongside yoga for 6 months now, I can clearly see how they are interconnected. I even feel the difference. The instructors are extremely well trained in their fitness fields and many of them have a background in massage. When a fitness instructor has a deep understanding of the body, it helps to support them as a health practitioner. Sasha Rooney who is the co-owner of Bodywise Yoga Studio is the studio’s pilates instructor and massage therapist at Clinique Masso-Soma. With certification in soft tissue release, cranial sacral, and myofascial release in addition to her honors as a Registered Massage Therapist (among others), she understands the complexity of the human body and the way strengths, weaknesses, alignment and misalignment of the body affect our enjoyment of our daily lives.
What is pilates?
Pilates is a total body conditioning routine that will help build flexibility, muscles strength, and endurance. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. The pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. Pilates is low impact, so it is comfortable for most people suffering from various joint issues, while still delivering a challenge.

With Sasha having completed her basic yoga teacher training she understands the benefits of practicing pilates and yoga. I’ve seen the interconnectedness myself between pilates and yoga by attending a pilates class once a week along with my regular yoga practice. Pilates supports yoga practice, and vice versa. Sasha’s background as a honours Registered Massage Therapist and Doula gives her an extensive knowledge when teaching beginner pilates, mixed level pilates, prenatal pilates, gait analysis, and myofascial lines of movement.
Bodywise Yoga Studio currently offers mixed levels pilates classes every Thursday evening at 5:30-6:30, but starting in April, the studio will soon have TWO pilates classes a week! The studio will be adding a second pilates class: beginner pilates on Tuesdays at 5:30-6:30. Both classes are open to everyone regardless of level. Those with advanced experience in pilates will benefit from the focused and attention to detail beginner classes on Tuesdays. Beginners to pilates can work at their level or try intermediate poses during the mixed level classes on Thursdays. Pilates is for everyone. See you at Bodywise Yoga Studio this April to get your pilates groove on and kick start the spring season.
