It’s summer! It’s time to get active outside! Have you considered yoga in the park? Change up your fitness routine and try practicing yoga in a new environment, one where your senses will come alive! Every Thursday from 12:00-12:45pm Bodywise Yoga Studio holds Yoga in the Park at Victoria Park in Moncton, New Brunswick (conditions permitting). If it’s raining, the alternate location is Bodywise Yoga Studio. The cost for summer yoga in the park is either half a punch (if you hold a punch pass) or just $7.25 for a drop in. If it’s your first class ever at Bodywise Yoga Studio the cost is a whopping $5.65. Classes are taught by either Jacynte Leger or Catherine Dupont on a weekly rotation. Each class is unique and one of a kind as each instructor brings their own flair and background to the instruction, yet yoga in the park is accessible for all. Jacynte’s style is a mixture of hatha and kundalini yoga, while Catherine offers a wonderful vinyasa flow (strong & slow, gentle, or a moderate vinyasa depending on the day). I’ve known Becky for 10 months now and the more I get to know her, the more I want to know about her. I first met Becky when I started attending her Thursday night gentle Kripalu yoga class at Bodywise Yoga Studio. At the time, I had just begun my full time yoga practice. In the beginning, I attended the gentle Kpripalu class almost on a weekly basis. It was exactly what I needed at that time. I needed her class. With practicing multiple times a week, her class helped to ground me and balance out the vigorous styles of yoga classes I was frequenting. The pranayama (breath work), meditations, gentle yoga postures, and guided relaxations helped to calm my busy and frazzled mind, body, and spirit. In the beginning, I had a hard time not letting my mind wander, but after some practice I learned to better control my thoughts and focus on the practice. Her Kripalu yoga classes have taught me a lot about myself over the last 10 months. I’ve learned to be compassionate toward my body, to listen to my body and to give it what it needs, to eliminate the phrase “I can’t” from my vocabulary, not let me ego get in the way, and to come to yoga class as I am. Becky taught me that regardless of what physical, mental, or emotional condition I am in (and it changes from day to day) I am welcome in her class–that I am meant to be in her class just as I am. I have the lovely pleasure of knowing Catherine Dupont, one of my fantastic yoga instructors at Bodywise Yoga Studio. I’ve been attending Catherine’s Strong and Slow Flow class on Monday nights since the fall at Bodywise Yoga Studio. I’ve had the opportunity to grow through Catherine’s excellent teachings. Her background in therapeutic yoga shines through her teaching with the unique ability (her super power) to provide exactly what I need that day. When I’m in Catherine’s presence, I feel an incredible sense of calm and comfort; she truly has the gift of teaching yoga. I can always count on Catherine’s genuine welcoming smile and excitement to be exactly where she is. She has the ability to take me to another world during savasana like no other instructor can. Her calming voice and centering messages take me to a place where there is complete contentment and inner peace. I’m surprised that I haven’t fallen asleep during the resting posture because she makes me so relaxed. After each and every one of her classes, I feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and restored. Catherine has taught me to stay grounded by repeating to myself when I need to hear it: may I think words of peace, may I speak words or peace, and may I feel peace. What a powerful, yet simple message.
Bodywise Yoga Studio started offering double the amount of pilates classes last month and it has been a huge success! Every Tuesday and Thursday you can immerse yourself in the world of pilates with Sasha Rooney, co-owner of Bodywise Yoga Studio and certified pilates instructor and massage therapist. Bodywise Yoga Studio currently offers mixed levels pilates classes every Thursday evening at 5:30-6:30, and a beginner pilates on Tuesdays at 5:30-6:30. Both classes are open to everyone regardless of level. Those with advanced experience in pilates will benefit from the focused and attention to detail beginner classes on Tuesdays. Beginners to pilates can work at their level or try intermediate poses during the mixed level classes on Thursdays. Pilates is for everyone. When I first started attending yoga classes at Bodywise Yoga Studio, one of the first classes as I attended was Jacynte’s Wednesday night all levels class Yang to Yin. I was immediately hooked! My love for yoga flourished from that moment. I loved the unique combination of relaxing yin yoga and reenergizing vinyasa flow. With Jacynte having an extensive training in yoga (550 hours of Hatha yoga certification through Yoga Ink and 200 hours of Kundalini yoga certification through Kundalini Yoga in the Loop) I knew my practice was in good hands. Each instructor brings their own unique flair to their classes and Jacynte brings a wealth of knowledge based on inspirations from Ruth Ritchman, Shakta Kaur, Doug Keller, Biff Mithoerfer, and Sarah Powers to each class. The thing I love most about Jacyne is that she is so malleable; she loves to teach a variety of yoga styles and soaks up everything life offers her. It’s a quality many of us strive for. Regardless of what yoga class Jacynte teaches, she ensures that every class is accessible for all regardless of fitness level–making all classes safe, experimental, and fun. The thing I love most about my one of a kind intimate yoga studio is that Bodywise Yoga Studio is more than just a yoga studio. Bodywise Yoga Studio is an all encompassing health and fitness facility that offers not only a range and variety of yoga classes, but is also a pilates studio and has a massage clinic in the building-Clinique Masso-Soma. Bodywise Yoga Studio welcomes people of all health and fitness levels and backgrounds. When first I started attending pilates and yoga classes at Bodywise Yoga Studio in September of 2014 I hadn’t attended a pilates class in about 5 years (and even then, I had only attended a few in my lifetime), and I had only been dabbling in yoga for about a year prior (and nothing consistent). With having no real background or experience in pilates or yoga, Bodywise Yoga Studio welcomed me with open arms. I was made to feel that I was meant to be exactly where I was. No judgments. No expectations. Immediately, I was made to feel at home in every class with each unique instructor. Bodywise Yoga Studio took an interest in me and my fitness goals. I was made to feel special, and not just someone else in the crowd. They saw me. They helped me get stronger. I flourished. Continue reading
I had the opportunity to try my first Thai Yoga Massage at Clinique Masso-Soma. The last time I had a massage was in November and my tired and sore muscles were due for some care and attention after months of daily physical yoga and pilates practice. I was curious as to the difference between a regular therapeutic/relaxation massage and a Thai Yoga Massage. My vinyasa and ashtanga yoga instructor Beth Dobson (read more about Beth here) owner of Clinique Masso-Soma and co-owner of Bodywise Yoga Studio had mentioned it to me before and I couldn’t resist the temptation to try it for myself. As a formal yoga instructor of 8 years (Beth’s been teaching for 10 years!) and having gone through the exact same YTT program I’m about to begin from Breathing Space Yoga Studio, I knew Beth would be the perfect person to talk to. With a new year coming up, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about your 2015 bucket list goals and dreams. Instead of using the words New Year’s resolutions, I like to use the words goals and dreams instead–it’s more realistic and long lasting. Resolutions often only last a mere couple weeks, yet goals and dreams are things we strive for, accomplish, and are attainable. Every year, I make a check list of things within my reach that I’d to do or places I’d like to see. Have you started thinking about your 2015 list? Is it your goal to live life to the fullest? Do you want to travel to a new destination? Maybe your goal is something intangible like making a difference in the world. Whatever your goals and dreams may be, know that a new year brings a new beginning. The New Year represents change, opportunities, and a journey to come. I still can’t believe how many items I was able to accomplish on my 2014 bucket list. I’m already thinking about what I’ll be adding to my 2015 bucket list and I can’t wait to get started on my journey.
