So You’re Getting Married in the Dominican Republic!

Dominican Republic
Of course our friends and family were not surprised when Corey and I decided to have a destination wedding in the Caribbean. The perfect wedding in my mind is one where I can walk down the beach to my husband to be. The sand is where my toes belong. When we first started looking at the variety of destinations in the Caribbean we were overwhelmed. They are so many places to choose from! We finally narrowed it down to a few and started weighing all of our options to see which one seemed the most practical and the best fit for us. After looking at what feels like every venue on each island, we finally agreed on the Dominican Republic for our turquoise inspired beach wedding. Continue reading

Yup, That’s the One! You Look Like a Disney Princess

San Lilies BridalI’m not surprised that this Nova Scotia born and raised girl found her dream wedding dress in Nova Scotia at San Lilies Bridal & Ladies Wear in Amherst, Nova Scotia. San Lilies boutique is a one of a kind bridal boutique located in an updated Victorian house. So me! Brightly painted, with turquoise highlights, I couldn’t help but fall in love with San Lilies. Dress after dress, I knew that I would find my dress at San Lilies, which has the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. They’re all so spectacular, feminine, original, and with so many of them being a mix of an antique, vintage, and modern style. Just what I was looking for. When I put my dress on, it was then that I realized I didn’t want to take it off. It was nothing like what I had been trying on or thought I wanted. I tried it on in the first place because I was being open to what Sandy had in the store and was having fun trying on the different dresses. This dress topped all others and made me feel special–beautiful. For the first time, I felt like a bride. There were no tears in this dress like there were in a few others only because I was shocked and speechless. I fell in love with the dress while staring at myself in the turquoise painted mirror with wide eyes Continue reading

Finding a Wedding Dress at San Lilies Bridal

Wedding
WeddingIf you have been following Turquoise Compass for a while now then you know that I like things that are one of a kind. I like being able to find places and things that have a unique charm about them that cannot be found anywhere else. I like different. San Lillies Bridal & Ladies Wear in Amherst, Nova Scotia is one of those places that I unintentionally stumbled upon and was pleasantly surprised. My friend mentioned that I should check out San Lilies while dress shopping because she had found a formal dress there before and was happy with the service and quality of dresses. After looking at their website, I knew I wanted to go wedding dress shopping there as they carry a variety of wedding dress designers at the small boutique style bridal shop. Prior to looking at San Lilies, I hadn’t found my dream dress so I knew I would keep hunting until I found it. What I didn’t expect was that I would find my dress at San Lilies. Continue reading

The Ring That Makes My Fiancé Smile

EngagementEngagementMy engagement was a complete surprise. My boyfriend made it his mission to surprise me, and he did. He wanted more than anything to be able to surprise me when he proposed. Prior to getting engaged, my boyfriend took me ring shopping on a few different occasions to get some ideas from me. Prior to looking at engagement rings with him, I had no idea what I would want. I hadn’t really thought about it. There wasn’t a need to at the time. I wanted to save the excitement of looking when I was actually going to get engaged. When we first started looking at rings together I was trying to figure out what I did not like, while giving him ideas of things I thought were pretty. They’re all pretty! They’re diamonds! I really wanted for him to pick out the ring he wanted me to have. Honestly, I would have been happy with anything which I had told him countless times (even though he didn’t believe me). He thought every woman would want a big diamond, but that wasn’t the case for me. I remember him telling me one night that he wanted me to have the best, a ring that would sparkle under the moonlight. Was he being romantic or crazy? I would be happy having any ring that he wanted me to have and that would be more special than anything else. Nonetheless, Corey was on a mission to pick out the perfect ring for me. Wedding Dress Shopping with my Mom

WeddingWeddingIt might appear to you that I am constantly searching for all things turquoise to write about on my blog Turquoise Compass, but it’s actually not the case. It’s really quite the opposite. I love writing about the turquoise destinations I have visited, turquoise inspired secret spots, and unique turquoise treasures, but turquoise seems to find me. Not the other way around as you might think. I usually stumble upon turquoise wherever I go. It just appears to me. I often have no intention of searching for that something turquoise, but it’s just there. It’s waiting for me to see it. Whether it is a turquoise painted house, tea cup, or simply a sign–I always seem to find it. It’s as if my eyes have been opened to the world of all things turquoise since starting my blog in 2013. It was no different when I went wedding dress shopping with my mom. We found TURQUOISE! Continue reading

Departing a Girlfriend, Returning a Fiancé: The Story of Our Engagement

MontrealAs a teacher, I was anticipating Christmas break weeks prior to the last day of school. As you can imagine, my students, like myself, were anxiously awaiting a much needed holiday. When it finally arrived, I departed the Maritimes bound for Montreal, QC where I would spend part of my break with my boyfriend and his family. I hadn’t seen my boyfriend in 10 days so I was extremely excited to see him and spend my first Christmas with he and his family in Montreal. Like a kid in a candy store, I was wide eyed and thrilled to go on a mini-vacation. It was 4 months prior since I had been on a flight and I was starting to get withdrawal. After 14 months of traveling full time to 22 countries and on 65 flights, I was starting to feel more at home on the road than in my actual home. I felt relief and excitement to get my fill of air travel and big city explorations this Christmas break. Continue reading
