So, what do Doula’s do? In brief, a Doula is a support person – or a birthing coach – for the birthing person, their support people, and their family. As your Doula, I would support you and your family with your unique needs – the options are infinite and tailored specifically to what you want. Each parent / family has different needs, thus it is difficult to define the multitude of ways in which I can support you. Essentially, you dictate the best ways I can support you. As a certified , registered, and insured yoga teacher, I can also combine yoga services (Prenatal, Postpartum, family yoga, and/or Yoga for Women, etc…) with my Doula supports. Feel free to visit my online yoga profile with the Canadian Yoga Alliance to view my credentials here.

Here is a brief overview to give you an idea of the types of services I can provide, but my services are dictated by my clients in consultation with them. My Forgiveness Fast

Toronto

Why was I fasting yesterday?

After being inspired by the founder of Yoga in Schools Canada, Breathing Space Yoga Studios, and MY incredible yoga teacher Jenny Kierstead, I decided to take a day for myself and fast for 18 hours! 18 being significant and representing the number 108, a sacred number in the yoga tradition–the distance between the earth and the sun is apporx 108 times the sun’s diameter, there are said to be 108 energy lines converging to and from the heart, among MANY other significances. Yesterday I reflected, wrote, and observed nature during my fast. I’m called it my FORGIVENESS FAST! Continue reading

Dusky Leaf’s Natural Rubber Mat: Foundation of a Solid Practice

Dusky Leaf Yoga

Dusky Leaf YogaAs a yoga practitioner and newbie yoga teacher, I’m feeling strong and confident with my new Dusky Leaf Natural Rubber Yoga Mat (you can also find the mat in the Canadian store), which provides one of the highest-traction surfaces available. Since graduating from my Yoga Teacher Training, I’ve started teaching yoga this fall and have been teaching for two months now. Using Dusky Leaf’s Natural Rubber Mat gives me a superior degree of slip resistance provided by the open-cell structure of the natural tree rubber, which is essential when teaching and demonstrating postures. Using a yoga mat that is made from natural rubber gives me a level of cushioning and resilience that is not often seen in a synthetic material, which is crucial when practicing up to 6 days a week. When teaching and practicing on my Dusky Leaf rubber mat I don’t have to worry about what my mat is doing or whether or not my hands and feet are slipping, but rather I can focus on the articulation of the yoga posture–my yoga practice itself. With my hands and feet rooted, I can move with ease from posture to posture. The natural rubber mat’s cushioning, resilience, and traction has become the foundation of my solid practice–strong and supported. Saying Yes! Starting my 500 Hour Advanced Yoga Training

Halifax, NS

Breathing Space Yoga StudioWhat’s next for me? Well, aside from taking a huge leap of faith to move to the north, starting a new job, and teaching yoga, I’ve decided to start my 500 hour advanced yoga teacher training! I started my 500 hour advanced with Breathing Space Yoga Studio in October with my first training weekend taking place in Halifax, NS. My first workshop was focused on yin yoga. I’m excited to broaden my yoga knowledge, where my first 400 hours of training focused on vinyasa yoga and yoga for schools. Starting my program this fall gave me a good excuse to head back to the east coast. I was away from the east coast a month and was already itching to return. Continue reading

I’m a Certified Yoga Teacher!

Certified Yoga TeacherI graduated from my 400 hour double certification Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) with Breathing Space Yoga Studio on August 14th, a mere 3 days before departing for the Dominican Republic for my wedding. My graduation couldn’t have come at a better time. My full-time yoga training prior to my wedding was exactly what I needed to keep me grounded and Zen before my big day. My 7 month YTT provided me with a 200 hour vinyasa based yoga teacher certification and a 200 hour yoga in schools certification recognized by the Yoga Alliance Registry (RYS). I never would have thought that my dabbling in yoga during my full-time travels around the world would lead me to becoming a certified yoga instructor. Although going down the yoga road started years ago and I have been practicing full-time for over a year now, I feel like my journey has just begun. It’s far from over. I’m excited to see where the journey takes me. I truly have found my passion. Continue reading

Dusky Leaf’s B.I.G Yoga Bag is Perfect When on the Go

Dusky Leaf

As a modern day yogi and woman always on the go, it’s as if Dusky Leaf’s – cerulean blue B.I.G Yoga Bag was created specifically for me, not only for it’s fabulous turquoise colour, but also because of its massive size and features. From the minute I received my big yoga bag, I fell in love with it. Its easy adjustable shoulder straps, wide carrying handles, heavy duty zipper, inside and outside pockets, and its rugged cotton canvas exterior (among other things) make my life easier, especially when living out of my yoga bag. This particular yoga bag is designed for anyone who seems to constantly be on the go (or a busy-bee traveler like me). No need to run back and forth between home and the gym/yoga studio; you can take everything you need for the day (or weekend) in the one bag. From a heavy duty extra long natural rubber yoga mat (as shown in the image below) to a change of clothes, this yoga bag has room for it all. Continue reading

Yoga Teacher Training with Breathing Space Yoga Studio

Yoga in Schools CanadaZeroslip Yoga TowelNever in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would become a yoga teacher. My fitness background was always in high intensity contact sports like rugby, running, and Crossfit. I played volleyball and soccer in high school, played varsity rugby throughout my university career, coached soccer and rugby for years, frequented the local gym/weight room almost daily, and turned my life over to Crossfit for nearly 3 years of my life before I started practicing yoga.

Standing Strong with Dusky Leaf’s Zeroslip Yoga Towel

Zeroslip yoga towelZeroslip Yoga TowelAt this stage in my yoga journey, I have started to push myself further by attending some advanced yoga classes (sometimes I think I am nuts) and attempting the intermediate and advanced postures during my ashtanga and vinyasa practice. It’s challenging, yet I am up for the challenge. There is something rewarding about doing something outside of my comfort zone. I’m not always successful, but there are moments (even glimpses of moments) when I surpass my expectations. Often times, my ego gets in the way and tells me that I can’t do it or that I’m not good enough. I’ve been trying to overcome these thoughts by giving it a try anyway. It can’t hurt right? Like in the movie Spanglish, the main character says in broken English over and over again “just try it”. I’ve been just trying it. It’s in these moments, when I am working beyond my comfort level that I need a solid ground to stand on. I’m able to do just that with my new non slip yoga towel. Continue reading

Jade Yoga’s Eco-Friendly Harmony Pro Mat

YogaNow that I have decided to get my Yoga Teacher Training in 2015, I figured it was high time I invested in a good yoga mat. Enough with my cheap synthetic $15 special (I’m always slipping on my old mat). Now that I am practicing up to 5-6 days a week I need  yoga mat I can rely on. Jade Yoga is committed to making the world’s most environmentally-friendly yoga mat out there and is considered one of the best performing yoga mat companies. Jade Yoga is committed to the highest level of customer service, while giving back to mother nature with each product purchased. Can you believe that Jade Yoga plants a tree with the purchase of a yoga mat in partnership with Trees for the Future, provides fresh water with the purchase of a yoga towel, and preserves the rainforest with the purchase of a yoga block? Halfmoon’s Yoga Props Support Relaxation, Reflection, and Rejuvenation

YogaYogaAfter the Christmas holidays concluded, I had high hopes that January would be a slow and relaxing month. As many of you can probably relate, January has shaped up to be an incredible busy month. My turquoise (in the colour “glacier”) Halfmoon rectangular bolster and silk lavender scented eye pillow have been helping me relax and stay zen during one of the busiest times of the year for a high school teacher: exam week. Now that I’m back into the routine of working, exercising, eating healthy, and maintaining a relatively balanced lifestyle after the break, I need to remember to take the time to relax, reflect, and get rejuvenated. It’s so easy to forget to take the time for relaxation during a time when we need it the most. The ECommerce store manager of Halfmoon Yoga Products said it best, “it takes more willpower to lie still for 10 minutes than it does to go to crossfit”. Why is it so hard for us to take the well earned time that we need (and deserve) to recharge? Continue reading
