Raglan’s Turquoise Surf Break

Raglan

My first stop in the north island after flying into Auckland was Raglan. After leaving Australia it was nice to be back in a relaxed surfing town. Raglan is the most popular surf town of the few surf towns in New Zealand; Raglan has been able to maintain its style and reputation for surfing. Raglan’s left hand surf break at Manu Bay is believed to be one of the best surf breaks in the world and was even featured in the surf film The Endless Summer. Continue reading

Around Phillip Island in 3 Days

Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a small island South East of Melbourne in Australia. The small island is known for its breakwaters, surfing reserves, sheltered swimming beaches, penguins, wildlife, bird watching, and motor sports. As an avid beach lover, I was excited to explore Phillip Island and its endless rugged coastline. Taking a surf lesson for the first time was something I wanted to do before leaving Australia. Phillip Island would be the perfect place to surf in South Eastern Australia. Attending the Penguin Parade was also high on my priority list as I hadn’t seen wild penguins prior to visiting Australia. I couldn’t leave Phillip Island without touring around to see the up close viewings of wildlife and birds.

Surf Lesson on Phillip Island with Island Surfboards

Phillip Island

I’m in the middle!

The first time I went surfing was in 2007 in Nicaragua and the second time was in Tofino, British Columbia, Canada. This is probably due to the fact that I’ve never been taught correctly or taken an official lesson (or tried on not so beginner waves). I have the type of personality that if I want to try something I just go for it. Full speed ahead. In most cases, this strategy has worked for me very successfully. Surfing however, is an adventure sport that I just couldn’t master on my own. Finally, at thirty years old, in my turquoise dream destination, I signed up for an official surf lesson at Smiths Beach with Island Surfboards on the beautiful Phillip Island in Victoria. Shockingly, Island Surfboards had me catching waves in no time. Continue reading
